P3-Chapter 1: The Golden Path
by BEE_sylverCassia Morvain had always walked the wide road.
Born to the High Council of Luminar, blessed with radiant cultivation that manifested as golden light, she was everything the realm expected of its future Archmage. Her path had been paved since birth—pristine stones arranged in perfect order, leading toward glory that glittered like stars.
Beside her, as always, walked Elian Veyra.
Where Cassia blazed, Elian was steady. The son of the Council’s Head Sentinel, he carried himself with quiet discipline, his silver-white robes always immaculate, his dark hair bound in the traditional style of his order. He never complained, never faltered, and had stood at Cassia’s side since they were children thrust together by duty and circumstance.
Like water and oil, Cassia’s instructors had once said. Destined never to blend.
Yet somehow, they had.
“You’re distracted again,” Elian observed as they crossed the academy’s training grounds. His voice held no judgment, only certainty.
Cassia forced a smile, the one she’d perfected over twenty-three years. “Just thinking about the ceremony next week. Once I’m formally inducted into the Council, everything changes.”
“Everything you’ve worked toward,” Elian agreed. But something flickered in his gray eyes—was it concern? Cassia couldn’t tell. Elian was always so difficult to read.
That evening, Cassia stood alone in the restricted archives, her fingers trembling as she touched the spine of a forbidden text. Shadowcraft: The Banished Arts.
She’d discovered it by accident three months ago, while researching healing techniques for a plague ravaging the outer villages. The Council had dismissed those villages as lost causes, too corrupted by dark energy to save. But this book—these forbidden methods—they could work. She knew they could.
The choice crystallized before her like ice forming on a winter pond: continue on her golden path and let hundreds die, or step onto the narrow plank of forbidden magic and save them all.
Her hand closed around the book.
