Chapter 19
by CharolineAlaric watched closely, a silent overseer. He allowed Asher latitude, but never indulgence. “Power is nothing without control,” Alaric had warned repeatedly.
“Strength is meaningless if it cannot protect, guide, and govern. You will prove yourself, or you will remain a danger to yourself—and to her.”
And Asher obeyed, not out of fear, but out of desire. He was not just building power for himself—he was building it for her. Every victory, every careful maneuver, every calculated risk, was measured against the knowledge that she would one day notice him not as the reckless boy of the past, but as a man worthy of command, of protection, of her attention.
The transformation was grueling. Rivals underestimated him, allies tested him, and enemies sought to destroy him. And yet, with each challenge, Asher emerged sharper, stronger, more composed—a force no one could ignore.
But even as he rose, Lilith lingered in his mind, a constant ache and fascination. Every detail of her lingered—the curve of her jaw, the light in her eyes, the delicate power she radiated even when unaware of it.
And then, at last, the moment came.
Alaric, standing on the balcony of the imperial palace, with a crown of his head, gazed at Asher with an expression equally stern and approving.
“You have proven yourself, Asher. Your control, your strategy, your strength—everything required that of a Duke, that you possess. You have earned the right to her attention… and to step out from the shadows.”
Asher’s chest tightened. He had dreamed of this moment, counted the days, imagined her reaction, rehearsed every possible declaration. And yet, when Alaric’s words confirmed it, a thrill unlike any other coursed through him.
“She is mine, then?” he asked, voice steady but darkly expectant.
Alaric’s lips pressed into a thin line, a mixture of resignation and warning. “She is your potential bride, yes. But remember this, Asher: power alone does not guarantee her trust, nor her heart. You must approach her with the same vigilance, respect, and restraint that brought you here. You are no longer the boy who tried to scare her. You are the man she may choose to see by her side—but she will not be coerced.”
Asher’s eyes glimmered with unspoken intensity. “I will not coerce. I will show her… I will make her understand that she belongs with me. That no one can protect her better than I can—no one can see her, desire her, or keep her safe like I will.”
Alaric studied him silently, the weight of his brother’s obsession evident, tempered by the undeniable growth in discipline and power.
“Then the rest is yours to earn,” he said finally. “But tread carefully. Desire unchecked is dangerous, even for one who has mastered the battlefield. Distance will protect her. Discipline will buy you time. Form the rules that inculcate discipline in you. Approach her gently. Never force her. It is her who must make the first move not you. If I found out that you forced her into the union then…”
Asher nodded, absorbing every word, every warning, every lesson. He had waited, endured, built himself into a man capable of claiming what he desired—and now, nothing would stop him.
Lilith was no longer a distant fascination. She was within his reach, and every step he had taken, every battle fought, had led to this moment.
The shadows of the past had sharpened him, the fire of desire had tempered him, and the promise he had made to himself burned brighter than ever: she would be his.
And Asher was ready.

The memory faded, leaving him standing in his wing, boots on the cold marble, fingers gripping the edge of the railing. He could still see her face—older, regal, untouchable. And in that instant, Asher admitted the truth he had never spoken aloud: he would never allow his obsession to waver again, for it had transformed into something far more consuming.
She was mine now, he thought, and for the first time, it was no longer a threat, no longer a warning—it was a certainty.
From then on, Asher kept his distance. He never appeared before her. Lilith felt like he didn’t exist in the Mansion.
Lilith wandered through the mansion with a quiet urgency, the echo of her heels against the polished floors mingling with the frantic beating of her heart. She had asked the butler—nothing. The maids—nothing. It was as if her husband, the man who had ignited a storm of sensations inside her, had vanished entirely.
She could still feel him—the memory of his touch, the warmth of his lips lingering on her nape, the unspoken intensity of his presence that had left her aching, craving more. Those series of kisses had unlocked a new world of desires that she had never imagined, and the hunger it stirred in her refused to be quelled.
She moved toward his wing, heart pounding. She didn’t care for protocol, for rules, for the walls Asher had imposed between them. She had to find him, to taste even a fragment of the intoxicating pull that had consumed her.
As she approached his door, she hesitated for only a moment before pressing it open. The room was dimly lit, the curtains drawn against the fading light of evening. Shadows stretched across the walls, and for a heartbeat, she thought she had succeeded—she would finally confront him.
But Asher… Asher was nowhere to be found. With a great disappointment Lilith left his place only to lock herself in her wing with the hopes of he himself coming to her again.
